Dr Alastair M.D. Gemmell was born in Ayr, Scotland in 1946. He graduated in 1968 with a B.Sc. Honours degree in Geography from the University of Aberdeen, and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow in 1971. Since 1973 he has been a member of the teaching staff at Aberdeen University, initially in the Geography Department, but latterly in the GeoSciences School. His research interests focus mainly on the geomorphology and glacial history of northern and mountain areas of the world, and in particular on the use of luminescence dating for the determination of event chronology during past glacial episodes. In addition he has developed a number of innovative exercises for giving students a grasp of the practical utilisation of geographical knowledge for the solution of problems.
